GARDINER GAB

A Taste of Gardiner

March 26, 2017 Lucia and Alicia Civile

Everyone has their favorite, go-to restaurant.  Some of their best, identifying qualities?  Achingly delicious food, warm atmosphere, and friendly, professional service.  Lucky for Gardiner natives, we have four (and counting) restaurants that hit it out of the park year after year.   So why stick to just one favorite?  We've got a few reasons why you should try them all.

Mountain Brauhaus.  Ever walk into a restaurant and feel like you're at a home away from home?  Enter Mountain Brauhaus - your rustic, German 'home away from home.'  Opened by German settlers and brothers in 1955, what was formerly known as the "Sugar Bowl" has been passed on from one generation to the next and has become a staple in our town of Gardiner.  You might even say that it's become a stomping grounds for locals, climbers and out-of-towners to join one another for a pint, good company and a hearty meal.  If the line that often finds it's way out the door is any indication, prepare yourself for some seriously delicious German food, (seriously).

Lombardi's.  Lombardi's has been serving homemade Italian dishes in Gardiner, NY since 1973.  That's over 40 years of perfecting their homemade pasta, authentic Italian breads and classic tomato sauce.  And we'd like to think that they've perfected all of their recipes.  From their decadent lasagna with over 15 layers of their ever-so-light homemade lasagna noodles to their classic parmigiana's to their house made focaccia flatbread pizzas, every dish has a signature flair reminiscent of a meal in Italy.  Is your mouth watering yet?  They'd love to accommodate you, just be sure to make a reservation; it's a hot spot for dinner in Gardiner!
To learn more about Lombardi's, visit their website here.

Cafe Mio.  Located in Gardiner Gables, Cafe Mio opened in May 2010.  Since then, esteemed Chef Michael Bernardo has been serving both quality interpretations of classic dishes and bold new ventures chalked in daily on the specials board.  This bustling open-kitchen eatery ornate with the work of local artists, serves both savory and sweet renderings of breakfast and lunch.  Including favorite classics with a twist like banana-bacon french toast and a homemade corned beef breakfast hash or exotic choices like the greek breakfast pizza and blackened catfish sandwich, Cafe Mio has your most important meal(s) of the day covered.
To learn more about Cafe Mio, visit their website here.

Tuthill House at the Mill.  Nestled between the home of Hudson Whiskeys Tuthilltown Spirits and the beautiful Shawangunkill River, this newly renovated Grist Mill is a great option for Gardiner residents who enjoy their meal with an ode to the town's history (and a pretty fantastic view.)  With a menu featuring French-inspired cuisine, it's easy to get lost in the unique plating of each dish and the beautiful marriage of flavors evoked by the restaurant's accomplished chef.  Pair that with the breathtaking backdrop of the roaring falls and the river that flows beyond the lush landscape, and you've got a recipe for a fantastic meal.

For a Cause

Gardiner NY is a spectacular place overflowing with reasons to celebrate the neighborhood, it's businesses, and the people that support it's growth.

One of our favorite reasons?  Business members whose mission begins at the heart of the community.  The businesses that we highlight in this issue all have something in common: they celebrate the community by giving back.

Mountain View Farm: A New Home for Abandoned Animals
Nearly 24 years ago, Bonnie Lanier founded Mountain View Farms; an equine facility offering training and riding lessons in Southern Ulster County.  Something that may come as a surprise however, is that many of Mountain View Farm's show horses and ponies have been rescued from otherwise grim circumstances.  The facility has worked with both Equine Rescue Resources, Catskill Animal Sanctuary, and nearby farms to provide homes for neglected horses and ponies as well as those destined to be slaughtered.  As Bonnie explains "We’ve gotten very much involved in horse rescue in the Tri-state area, and there’s no reason we can't save young horses and turn them into an excellent show horse or give old horses a life of luxury."  In fact, many of Bonnie's horses have gone on to champion local shows as well as prestigious competitions.  Integrating the business further, Bonnie became a founding member of the Ulster County Horse Council which hosts several events throughout the year, including trail rides and horse shows, which are held in Ulster County.  Bonnie hopes that her efforts convey a message and she goes on to explain, "people think that horses are just animals, but they aren’t.  I've seen them in a very different light.  They have emotions and feelings and fears, and they should never have to live out their fears."  And if Bonnie has anything to do with it, they won't. If you're looking to ride with a mission, Mountain View Farm is a great choice.  To learn more about Mountain View Farm, click here.

Uptown Attic: A New Life for Unused Garments
Jodi Whitehead opened the doors to Uptown Attic eight years ago and since, her high-end consignment shop has offered stylish looks that range in casual flare to professional trends for every season.  But, if you think it's your average clothing shop, think again.  Uptown Attic works with locals consigners for locals to provide beautiful, gently used (to brand new) clothing and accessories.  In addition to running a boutique that brings the community together by-design, Jodi works extensively with local businesses and non-profit organizations to provide for people in need.  Since it's opening, Uptown Attic has supplied hundreds of bulk donations to Family of New Paltz of up-cycled, high quality clothing items that simply don't sell within a 90 day period.  Jodi notes that she enjoys giving to Family of New Paltz because when people come to the organization, "some just have the shirt on their back and it's like a shopping experience for them, and everyone deserves to have that experience."  Furthermore, Jodi offers discount incentives throughout the year at special "Ladies Night Out" events to contribute school supplies and canned goods to the organization's bank, most recently teaming with Gardiner Liquid Mercantile for a discount encouraging shoppers to 'imbibe'.  Uptown Attic will also donate to local non-for-profits, including Gardiner Library, throughout the year for fundraising events.  So when you shop local at Uptown Attic, you support local businesses who support local businesses that support local people in our local community.  To learn more about Uptown Attic, click here.

The Inn at Kettleboro: Joining the Community for a Cause
Most people stay at a bed and breakfast when visiting a town for a wedding or special occasion, but more and more folks are coming back to The Inn at Kettleboro for a rejuvenating stay.  Why?  It could have something to do with the ownership.  Robert Witkowski, long-time resident of Gardiner and owner of The Inn at Kettleboro has integrated himself into the community in several ways, and offering a caring, thoughtful stay is just one way he welcomes locals and out-of-towners alike to our community.  As Vice President of The Board of Wallkill Valley Land Trust, Robert focuses heavily on preserving land in Southern Ulster County through fundraising efforts throughout the year.  The trust will be celebrating it's 30th year this year and since Robert's eight-year tenure, the Inn has been one of the first houses on their House Tour.  Robert also lends his efforts to the Dorsky Museum in New Paltz, donating stays at the Inn as part of a silent auction to raise funds.  Robert explains that in the community "My focus is really on the fundraising side" and he's further maximized his efforts at the museum by joining the auction committee.  And we certainly think a stay hosted by Robert is a great way to support and be welcomed into our blossoming community. To learn more about the Inn, click here.

Sunflower Art Studios: Art-portunities for Youth and Beyond
Liz Glover Wilson opened Sunflower Art Studios in 2015 with a very clear mission: "to bring visibility and accessibility to the arts without economic division."  The heart of Sunflower Art Studios' vision came to life in 2015 with the Sunflower Art Festival; a free event celebrating the life of Liz's sister, Esther, and her love for community and artistry.  In a short span of just two years, the studio has seen substantial growth and intertwined it's efforts to benefit the arts, local businesses and families.  In fact, the non-profit organization now offers scholarships to it's after-school art program for kids K-6th grade and provides low-cost events, led by local artists, that celebrate children's creativity.  In addition to functions held for children, Liz also offers several avenues for adults to explore locally.  Sunflower Art Studios offers a unique take on yoga classes; a donation based course accepting $1-$15 per class for attendees held each week inside DM Weil Gallery (yes, please to all of the above!).  The Studio also hosts several noteworthy "Sippin' Creative" courses with local restaurants that encourage adults to express their artistic side (with the added bonus of alcoholic refreshments).  And we can't forget the studio's pop-up shop that displays the work of over 30 local artists and artisans just in time for the holidays each year (as if you needed another reason to shop).  To learn more about Liz's studio and how you can get involved, click here.

And to all of our businesses who donate their time and efforts to GAB, we thank you.  You support the community in an incredible way and we look forward to working together for many more years for a cause.

February 11, 2017 Lucia and Alicia Civile

Valentines Day is a holiday that is loved by some and loathed by others.  In any case, I'd like to think that most people don't like the idea of spending hundreds of dollars on chocolates or a giant teddy bear one day a year to tell the person they love, well, that they love them.  So whether you're a fan of the holiday or not, these gift ideas for the special person in your life can turn the holiday's greatest skeptic into a V-day celebrator.

Stay-cation at a Home Close to Home

January 29, 2017 Lucia and Alicia Civile
Audrey's Farmhouse

Audrey's Farmhouse

Taking a vacation can be a beautiful thing, but sometimes vacations should come with a warning label.  ["Warning: vacation may cause jet lag, digestive problems, the common cold and as much stress as intended to melt away."]  We travel to faraway lands because the appeal to escaping the everyday drudge can be overwhelming, despite our own brush with stories reminiscent of a Griswold family getaway.  So this winter, why not give yourself the sabbatical you deserve without all of the stressors that can arise from traveling abroad?  We've shared some of the reasons why you should vacation at a home not-so-far away from home this winter.

Audrey's Farmhouse

Audrey's Farmhouse

Minimize your Travels.  Are we there yet?  Travel delays, traffic, lost luggage, broken down vehicles, OH MY.  Travel mishaps can amplify stress on a vacation; and doesn't that defeat the purpose?  Plus, traveling costs can add up quickly and easily surpass your original estimates.  Not to mention, any time that you could be using to relax can quickly equate into lost time put aside for packing and re-packing, driving and flying, or waiting on traffic and delays.  The bottom line?  Travel time can cut into the beginning, middle and end of your trip and could be the source of vacation woes.  Cut the travel time and instantly lengthen your relaxing vacation.

Kettleboro Inn

Stay at a local Bed and Breakfast.  Most people stay at a bed and breakfast when visiting a town for a wedding or special occasion, but why not treat yourself to a cozy weekend stay close to your home town?  Take advantage of the mountainous ranges, snowy weather and breathtaking scenery during this time of year, even if only for a weekend.  Having someone take care of the arrangements for your stay (fireplace included) while staying in a relaxed atmosphere is just what the doctor ordered.  Plus, the breakfast spread that these places put together is no ordinary meal (believe me, I've seen them with my own eyes!).  Breakfast + warm atmosphere + relaxing stay + amazing views = good idea.

Kettleboro Inn

Recharge.  Ever go on a vacation and find that you come back sicker than a dog, or worse, catch something that kicks in during your getaway?  Distant lands, foreign germs and recent strangers could be the culprit for your new and exciting strain of illness.  Enjoying a vacation at a home away from home gives you the time to watch that show you've been interested in, or read that book you've been curious about, or just cuddle in bed and get cozy.  Taking the time you need to catch up, unwind and focus on yourself according to your schedule gives you that little boost that you'll need to make it through this winter.  And scheduling a stay-cation with the family can be just as rewarding.  Find an excuse to get active and go hiking, or visit that art gallery or local museum you've been meaning to visit.  We think you'll be pleasantly surprised with what the Hudson Valley has to offer.

Minnewaska Lodge

Become a tourist of Your Neck of the Woods.  Our lives are busy and balancing a work, home and social life can feel like a balancing act.  How many times do you pass by a place and add it to your list of 'things to do' in the area for when you have the time?  A stay-cation allows you to take out that list and explore the very neighborhood you pass by every day.  It's amazing just how different our surroundings appear when we look at them from the eyes of an outsider.  Get to learn the history of the area you call home.  Eat at that restaurant you've been meaning to try or that brewery you've heard about.  Stop in and read a magazine at the local library or watch the snow fall at the bed and breakfast you're staying in.  Whatever you do, make a promise to yourself to enjoy your much-needed vacation at your home away from home, to the fullest.

New Year, New You: The Experiment

January 15, 2017 Lucia and Alicia Civile
people 10.jpg

Disclaimer: It's never a good idea to start a diet simply because it's the start of a new year.  This tends to be a 'quick fix' that bring people back to square one because they're just not ready for it.  I've never been a dieter.  I'm the kind of person who will sit down and eat half a pizza.  Come to think of it, I'm the kind of person who should probably sign up for a hot dog eating contest.  Anyway, my view on eating was very c'est la vie; indulge in life every day (and I took the indulging aspect très far.)  My diet started as a personal experiment with no articles attached.  With temptation all around me, and my two year old son to take care of, I forged forward and looked at my diet as a 7 week trial that I would stick to fervently in order to see the honest results of such major change.  In fact, I didn't actually feel the repercussions of my poor eating habits until I fully committed to healthier ways, and then stopped committing and the results were greater than I ever could have imagined.  This article reflects my personal experience with dieting and just how profoundly my view on it has changed.

The Diet.  I didn't think I would ever have the self control to commit to a diet.  After all, I had never made a serious enough attempt and eating unhealthy foods brought me immense satisfaction.  Potato chips, macaroni and cheese, Chinese take-out, burgers - the list of processed, sodium, nitrate, and GMO foods were the only foods making up my diet; fruits and vegetables were lightly sprinkled in.  And entering into adulthood is tricky.  When the foods we eat are no longer chosen for us, this 'freedom' can often translate into harmful habits.  Being at my heaviest; I felt bloated and uncomfortable in my own skin, my clothes were not fitting the same way they used to and I rarely started my day motivated.  Subsequently, mulling the idea over with a friend and mother of similar circumstance, we decided to commit to the experiment together.  After going out with a bang, I cut dairy, gluten, potato, rice, sugar and alcohol out of my diet, and I was very strict.  This was not calorie counting or weight watching.  I ate as many fruits and vegetables as I wanted, a third or less of my diet was meat and half the food I was eating was fresh, all for the sake of sticking to the experiment.

Not Until Your Ready Will Results Come.  I came to a point of realization: I was ready to experience real change, so I made real change.  Without that drive and a friend to encourage me throughout the process (and hold me accountable), my attempt would have been an unsuccessful one.  I did not step on the scale every day, in fact I didn't even step on the scale every week.  My focus was on making healthy choices and being honest with myself to see the best results.  And halfway through my "trial" I even started a gentle exercise regimen in Gardiner twice a week.  The changes I experienced over those weeks were small and very gradual, but the overall results?  After seven weeks, I had lost 17 lbs.  My pants became baggy and clothing that used to barely fit, fit me comfortably.  I felt confident, focused, motivated and relaxed.  Small stressors didn't affect me the way they used to - and the kicker?  I didn't realize just how good I was feeling until I went back to my old habits and stopped reaping the benefits.  That piece of cake that was supposed to give me the ultimate satisfaction instead gave me a rush of feelings - but none of them were very good.  After going back to my harmful diet, I had less control over my temperament and I experienced mood spikes at different times of the day.  Small stressors had a large affect on me and my focus lacked focus.  At the end of it all, the realization of "you are what you eat" hit me big time.

The Solution.  Becoming healthy is not a trend, it's striking a balance and a lifestyle that your mind and body should commit to.  If changing your diet and exercise regimen is a healthy change, do it.  If you're not in the right mindset or it's a harmful quick fix, don't.  And if you want results that will last a lifetime, get active and stay active.  Join your local gym and be a part of a team effort, like Gardiner Athletics.  Gardiner Athletics teaches it's members to build strength, to do it with support, and experience the benefits.  With classes that range from Pilates, to competitive Strength Training, to Endurance, it's not hard to find one that's right for you.  Don't forget fun classes like swing dance lessons (coming up!).  And instructors are always there to encourage you throughout the process.  Pair that with a healthy diet and you've got a brand new you, just in time to break out your newfound confidence with the warmer weather.  Just remember, as you strive towards a better year, be good to your bodies, this year and next year, today and always.

Tax Season Faux Pas; Why You Should Think Twice About Doing Your Own Taxes

January 1, 2017 Lucia and Alicia Civile

Tax Season is upon us and our intentions to spearhead tax goals like a Viking usually fall short to reality.  Life can sometimes get in the way of plans (what else is new?) and when you're choosing between software, an accountant or a large tax preparation company to assist in filing taxes, deciding on the best option for you and your business can be deceiving.  In fact, according to a CNBC survey, almost half of the nation's taxpayers do their own taxes, but it's no guarantee that they're being done well.  I sat down with Melinda Mirto from Mirto CPA PLLC and learned a few of the reasons why hiring a professional, licensed accountant to help with tax and business needs is a must.

If You're Starting a Small Business. Starting your own business can be an enormous undertaking and an intimidating commitment.  Having an accountant to help you through the process can pose a major relief.  As Mirto relays, "Business owners put their focus on their business [as they should]; they're not accountants and they don't work for the IRS."  And Mirto assures our readers that small mistakes can create long-term complications.  For example, if a small business were to purchase a business license under an incorrect entity, this could leave openings for greater liability.  Don't leave openings for greater liability.  Our advice?  Talk with an accountant first and start your business on the right foot; the foot that is most advantageous to your business.

If You Own a Small Business. The most common problem that Mirto comes across with small businesses are, unbeknownst to them, they "aren't paying the correct taxes or filing the right forms, leading to problems with the IRS."  She further explains that sometimes the IRS doesn't audit a business for years, so "you may think that you're in the clear, but after two years without audits, the IRS will find you've done something wrong," which can lead to unnecessary penalties.  Yikes.  Plus, large tax preparation companies or filing services tend to group businesses into general categories when filing taxes, whereas a professional accountant can easily recognize a business' unique needs and specific deductions.  Simply put, Mirto explains that "because every business is different, having an accountant to identify what's best for it's particular needs is crucial and could be the difference of saving thousands of dollars throughout the year; tax software just can't give you that."  Moreover, small businesses that have an accountant prepare individual and business returns for the year can eliminate possible phase-outs from deductions that otherwise wouldn't be available to them.  Suddenly, the extra money towards hiring a professional for your business needs doesn't seem so steep.

Individuals.  Most people think they're in the clear when using a simple software to file their taxes, but Mirto explains that "a lot of people aren't getting the deductions and credits they could be."  When you hire a professional to file your taxes, they can easily identify the best strategy for you to get your penny's worth.  She goes on to further disclose that some individuals that prepare their own tax returns will use incorrect tactics to receive bigger refunds, so they're actually taking credits that aren't due to them.  So, what does this mean in the grand scheme of things?  If the IRS doesn't catch this mistake right away, you'll have to pay the money back, plus interest and pop-up fees.  Skip the fees.  Hire an accountant who can help you do it right the first time around and get the most bang for your buck.

The Times They Are a Changing.  Our taxes and the policies that accompany them have the capacity to quickly change.  It's important to have the know-how to identify these changes and to make sure that we abide by the law throughout the process.  Mirto explains over the past few years, a growing trend with the current health insurance policy is to under claim earnings to offset growing costs.  Why this doesn't work?  Any "saved" expenses translate into unpaid tax credits and ultimately, bunched fines.  And with Trump's newest proposals and the ever-changing political climate, Mirto urges taxpayers that it's never too early to start considering a plan for next year's taxes.  To learn more about Mirto CPA PLLC, click here.

Get Cozy with Books this Winter

December 11, 2016 Lucia and Alicia Civile

It's been a long time since your last trip to the library; maybe it's even more of a trip down memory lane. We're adults now and with adulthood, there come inconveniences like bills, work, stress and more!  We get it.  But we believe that no matter what age you are, a visit to the library is a special one for any person.  Here's a few reasons why you should support your local library.

To Touch a Physical Book.  Can you remember the last time that you turned a page in a book?  I'm not talking about swiping a key on your iPad or Kindle.  I'm talking about physically feeling the page on your fingertips and that intoxicating smell of a book that brings us back to the time that we fell in love with reading.  YES, that place.  And you know that phrase, "Silence is golden?"  Sometimes, not until we're grown up do we appreciate just how precious it is to find a place where we can indulge in peace and quiet.  I give you, your local library.

Trustworthy Material.  Maybe you're writing an essay, maybe you're writing a dissertation, you may even be winning an argument.  Whatever it is that you may be doing, using online resources to back up your information can be a faulty route.  Sure, there's a seemingly endless amount of information available to us on the internet, but finding data that's trustworthy can be tricky.  Ditch the "search bar" and visit your local library.  Need help?  Your local librarian is just as helpful as a search key, if not better.  So, if you want a greater chance of finding material that hasn't been tampered with, hit the books and go to the library.

The Times They are A-changing.  Today's libraries are evolving.  And unlike movie rental stores like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video, libraries are an ever-growing part of the community that aren't soon-to-be-extinct dinosaurs.  A few of the perks at Gardiner Library?  Free Wifi, computer access, bestselling books and local authors, community events, CD and DVD rentals, programs for children and adults, access to learning tools like Rosetta Stone, Mohonk Preserve passes, support groups and so much more.  The list of just how much Gardiner Library offers our community could be an article in itself.  So get out there and start exploring!

Be a part of the History.  Ever wondered about the history of good 'ole Gardiner?  The local library can help.  Libraries tend to collect anything and everything from their town, including news clips, magazine features, books by local authors, maps, and genealogy.  In fact, your local library is a big part of that history and has grown with your neighborhood and community as much as you have.  Being a part of that growth as a patron means supporting libraries for the enjoyment of future generations to come.  And we hope that in your support, you are reminded of your own history with the library and the first time you fell in love with reading.

Why You Should Always #ShopSmall

December 4, 2016 Lucia and Alicia Civile
Clocks by Leonie Lacouette

Clocks by Leonie Lacouette

Black Friday and Cyber Monday have come and gone and your left with lots of… stuff.  Quantity? Most definitely.  Quality?  Maybe.  Personalized Customer Service and Gifts?  Not really.  If stuffing stockings full with generic stocking stuffers has left you feeling empty this season, we’ve got a few reasons why shopping small should be part of your rhetoric every time you shop, not just on small business Saturday.

Flowers by Elissa

Flowers by Elissa

Get a Unique Gift. When you buy gifts from a place like Walmart, chances are, you're not buying the recipient anything special.  Products found at big shopping centers often target bargain or ‘last-minute’ shoppers looking for an easy find.  The problem with these gifts?  The smaller price tags are designed to lure consumers into buying more, and ultimately spending more on generic items that are easy to stock up on.  And you pay for what you get; quality is no guarantee.  On the contrary, when you shop small you support local artisans, retailers and owners that provide handmade, one-of-a-kind offerings and the kind of customer service that makes your time with the business special.

Sunflower Art Studios and Pop-Up Holiday Shop

Support Your Community.  Small businesses provide jobs in your neighborhood, for people that are near and dear (especially near).  Putting money back into the local economy not only does good for the community, it most likely directly benefits your neighbors versus massive corporations.  Small businesses also happen to be a large draw for tourism, so that niche little boutique on the corner of Main Street has a much larger impact than most locals realize.  Studies even show that casual face-to-face interactions at neighborhood businesses help build personal relationships and can positively affect your own business.  Yes aaaand heck yes.

Sunpower Solar Farm

Sunpower Solar Farm

Noteworthy Customer Service.  Ever step into a large retail store and get the feeling that no one wants to be there; including the employees?  In all likelihood, those employees are stretched extra thin for the holidays and holiday cheer is a little hard to come by.  In fact, when the elves behind the checkout counter are looking to finish their workday as quickly as possible, it's hard to get good customer service.  In contrast, employees of small shops generally play a more hands-on role in the business and build a strong sense of care in the work that they do.  And in this scenario, your shopping experience likely won't include a scramble to beat other customers to the shelves and checkout counter, fostering a more leisurely approach.  This allows for an enjoyable and personal shopping experience for the customer with owners and employees alike who are happy to be working hard and supporting the business.

Goodnow Family Farm & Petting Zoo

Goodnow Family Farm & Petting Zoo

Small is Big.  That little business that brings charm and character to your neighborhood adds more than just personality and pizzazz.  To give an idea, small businesses greatly outnumber large corporations and employ over half of the nation's private work force, making them as incredibly crucial to the health of America's economy as they are to our neighborhood.  So that cute little shop down the street that works extra hard to stay there is truly a Goliath force in financial stability.

So the next time that you're out and about looking for a gift or even a little something for yourself, be sure to pay your local 'mom and pop' shop a visit first; I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with your experience. Click here to find out where to shop in Gardiner this holiday season.

Thank you to all of your local, small business doing BIG things in our humble town of Gardiner, NY.

Why you should spend Thanksgiving at your local restaurant's table

November 20, 2016 Lucia and Alicia Civile

Thanksgiving is a holiday that brings fond memories surrounding the good, the bad (and sometimes) the ugly meals.  When the turkey gets burnt, family members can't make it, or it just becomes too much work, going out to eat on Thanksgiving has become a very appetizing option; and it's an option that everyone at the table can be thankful for.  This Thanksgiving, Tuthill House will be serving a traditional Prix Fixe Thanksgiving menu in addition to their dinner menu comprised by expert chef, Jeremy Berlin.  So, if your plans just aren't shaping up, skip the dirty dishes and try something new for the holidays; we've got a few appealing reasons why you should eat out this year.

If there isn't always something for everyone.  Did Uncle Rob bring another new friend to Thanksgiving this year?  Don't worry, they're probably just gluten-free, vegetarian and lactose intolerant.  Thanks for the warning, Uncle Rob.  In today's day and age, dietary restrictions and finicky preferences are prevalent.  Tuthill House is prepared for this sort of thing with a wide variety of options on their seasonal menu and traditional options for guests looking forward to a conventional Thanksgiving meal.  In fact, every dish at Tuthill House is thoughtfully prepared and as Chef Jeremy Berlin explains, the dedication and detail put into each dish begins when "the ingredients are purchased, then prepared, all the way to the plating and final presentation."

If the host never gets to sit down.  Everyone is seated at the table, but the host is still on the move, making sure preparations are perfect.  This person either really loves all of the hard work that goes into preparing Thanksgiving, or they do an excellent job at pretending to.  Either way, they're missing out on their company.  Here's a thought; treat them to a labor-free meal this year.  As Chef Jeremy Berlin suggests, "I think it’s nice for people to go out and enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner, without having to struggle with the preparation or clean-up at home... plus, the property itself is gorgeous and lends itself to spending an afternoon here."  And who doesn't want to be served a meal while they sip on an alcoholic beverage and reminisce disasters of Thanksgiving past?  Hello, Thanksgiving future, pleased to make your acquaintance.

If a last-minute dash to the grocery store isn't really your thing.  Our objective of making it to the grocery store ahead of schedule comes with good intentions, but it usually doesn't work out that way.  Sometimes there are items we forget to purchase.  Sometimes we forget to purchase the whole list.  This can lead to a mad dash in the grocery store that hosts and guests alike fall victim to.  Don't be a victim.  Be a hero.  Make reservations at your local restaurant and save yourself the stress, the planning and last-minute shopping.

If creatively repurposing turkey isn't for you.  So the people who promised to take leftovers home have hopped off the gravy train after a long Thanksgiving lineup.  Don't worry, you can make lots of things with turkey(!) like turkey lasagna, turkey pot pie, turkey a la mode - this list goes on for days, pun intended.  OR you can take home modest leftovers from a satisfying, delicious meal at your local restaurant.  Chef Jeremy Berlin thinks eating out for Thanksgiving is a fantastic option, and further explains "the style of food that we’re offering is unique to the area that people will really enjoy" and we agree.  So whether you're a host, a guest, or just don't have plans for Thursday, we've got just the place in mind.

Tuthill House will be open from 12 pm - 4 pm for on Thanksgiving day. To make reservations for your Thanksgiving dinner - call the restaurant at 845.255.4151.

If you can't make it out to Tuthill House for this Thanksgiving, the restaurant has big plans for the future.  Berlin plans to incorporate a three-course Prix Fixe menu throughout the week that offers an approachable, affordable and straightforward option for locals.  They are even working with Sunflower Art Studios for upcoming 'sip and paint' events.  To learn more about Tuthill House and what they offer, visit their website at tuthillhouse.com

Kiss My Face; Cruelty Free Kisses for 30+ Years

November 6, 2016 Lucia and Alicia Civile

You may not know this, but Kiss My Face is a local business; established right in Gardiner NY, where it's current world headquarters can be found.  KMF has stayed true to it's original values as a company dedicated to using only the finest, cruelty-free resources to create a healthy, high end line of skincare, without the colossal price tag.  In the 1980's, two vegetarian farmers, Bob Macleod and Steve Byckiewicz, began their line of products with a goal inline with that of their farming; to make organic, natural and cruelty-free commodities.  In fact, their venture developed even before those words held any magnitude in the skincare market.  What originated as a door-to-door exchange of handcrafted olive bar soaps, soon turned into a high demand product line of natural goods.  Since then, the company has grown significantly from it's humble beginnings 30 years ago and its products are now distributed in every state and in 19 countries worldwide.  We love Kiss My Face because it's a company that stands behind it's original promises; to keep all kisses natural and show consumers why kisses truly are the best way to make it better.

Passionately Natural, Incredibly Effective.  Words like oxybenzones, parabens, aluminum chlorohydrate, triclosan and phthalates don't exist among the natural ingredients found on a label of your favorite Kiss My Face product. That's because as a company dedicated to bringing consumers consistently better skincare, it’s merchandise claims a list of ingredients that are recognizable, and most importantly, good for your body.  And both Heather Halpern, Director of R & D, and Mia DiFrancesco, Trainer, agree that KMF's products are some of the best on the market.  DiFrancesco, who previously worked as a makeup artist for top of the line brand names, goes on to further explain that she "used to marvel looking at jars of creams that were selling for $300 that paled in comparison to the ingredients that Kiss My Face uses.”  On top of having high quality ingredients, all of the products are guaranteed cruelty-free.  Halpern confirms frankly by saying, "We don't do any animal testing. Most [of the products] get tested on me, actually."  And after 10 years as a Product Developer, we think she's perfected the art of incredibly effective skincare that’s consistently better.

These are a few of my Favorite Things. While every commodity that Kiss My Face carries is extraordinarily natural, the girls shared a few of the products they're especially excited about.  The new line of natural and effective spray deodorants are a favorite of Halpern's because they're "cleaner and greener" than leading brands.  She further reveals that "there aren't very many companies in our realm that are offering spray deodorants... we're ahead of the curve."  And with fresh ingredients like thyme, green tea and cucumber that give you 24 hour odor protection, it's one of our favorite things, too.  DiFrancesca explains that she loves the sun care line and further discloses that "I think of it like, skincare meets sun care... just really good ingredients that can be used every day; not just for sun care."  Sunscreen that doubles as an every day moisturizer; could this be the end of leftover sunscreen as we know it?  With the winter season quickly approaching, I think that's a movement we can easily get behind.

Small Town, Big Things. Placed at the foothills of the Shawangunk Mountains,  Gardiner is a truly special region that claims an exciting array of businesses rich in history.  Kiss My Face is no exception to this.  Beginning as an idea sparked by two farmers with high hopes, with the support of locals and out-of-towners alike, Kiss My Face has turned into a skincare empire rooted in the heart of our small town.  DiFrancesco adds, "How many organizations can say that one of their first customers is now working for the company? A lot of our employees have been here since the beginning.”  Halpern laughs in response by saying "You should really talk to Mary, she remembers when there was an outhouse out back."  Yeah, it's that local.  So, the next time you're at the supermarket and you're in need of some skincare relief, a natural toothpaste or even some hand soap, remember: a kiss always makes it better.
